Do You Think Employers Should Help With Return-To-Work Expenses? You Make The Call

A new survey suggests that employers should be shouldering or at least sharing the costs of employees involved with returning to the office. More than half of employees want their employers to cover expenses related to parking, uniform, and toll roads. Sixty percent of employees surveyed said inflation has made the cost to work in the office go up in the last twelve months.

Six in ten employees surveyed said they would ask for a raise if their employers would make them spend their own income to come to work, while fifty-nine percent said they would look for a new job.

Four potential solutions for employers to both implement office return and mitigate related expenses include:

  • Covering costs through employee stipends
  • Reducing costs through flexible policies, such as a more casual dress code or flexible hours.
  • Help employees budget through financial wellness programs or offer financial wellness benefits.
  • Offset costs by reducing compensation for hybrid and remote workers.

As employers demand that employees return to the worksite, employees are pressing back as to the costs of complying with such requests. Pre-pandemic, this was a non-issue as to retention. Post-pandemic costs associated with returning to work are a very important issue and employers that permit employees to work at home full- or part-time have an advantage.
